Serengeti Walking Safaris

There are only a handful of companies operating walking safaris in Serengeti National Park. Keeping participants to a minimum will ensure that the experience will always feel exclusive. An armed National Park ranger accompanies all walks.

With our highly trained guides who also carry high caliber rifles, you can be rest assured that you will be given a safe and first-class experience. The biggest misconception about the Serengeti is that there are too many lodges and camps. In fact, more than 80 percent of the park is unspoiled wilderness areas, and it is here that our walking safaris are conducted. The Serengeti wilderness area is remote, therefore, we suggest guests fly into the Serengeti and then are met by our team to transfer them into the campsites.

The resident population of game in the Serengeti is fantastic. However, the vast number of wildebeest and zebra drives the entire ecosystem as they move across the park following the rains. These walking safaris will follow this Migration.

The walk itself is not based around covering massive amounts of distance, but more to become immersed into the vast wilderness of Africa. This raw experience will sharpen your senses and help you become more in tune with your natural self, leaving man-made structures behind. The walk is equally spent just ‘being’: absorbing, understanding, and feeling the sights and sounds around you. It’s very typical to sit by a water hole, look at the view from the top of an escarpment, or sit in peace under a baobab tree. There of course is walking during the day, but as a guideline, the furthest you will walk in any given day is approximately 15kms. You will carry a daypack with only your personal belongings for the day and water.

As all the walking is within wilderness zones, there are no permanent camps or lodges. We take a lightweight mobile camp, which acts as a base for the duration of the walks. The camp is basic but provides all the ‘creature comforts’ you need for a very pleasant overnight stay. Light canvas dome tents are equipped with thick mattresses and duvets covers (no sleeping bags) Meals are generally eaten al fresco under the stars, however, a mess tent is available in case of bad weather. Meals are prepared sit-down meals with pre-preparations done in Arusha to allow for more elaborate food. Cold drinks, beers, and a small selection of wine is available. There are hot water bucket showers and shallow pit latrine toilets. The camp is either based in one location and carry out day walks from there, or we can move the camp and walk from location to location. We generally will suggest that we keep a camp in one location for at least 2 days and then walk to the next location. Overall suggestions are to book at least minimum 2 nights and most trips will go longest 4 nights. Of course itineraries are based around specific goals in mind and we can accommodate any given amount of days.

In general the program of the day is to take a walk after breakfast to avoid the heat of the day. We carry lunches with us and enjoy a picnic in a scenic place and arrive back in camp by 3pm. Guests enjoy the afternoon at leisure or we take a short walk to a great place for sundowner drinks!

You can expect to see large mammals and we do so at a very safe distance. Animals are nervous of humans on foot and we respect their space and do not approach them unnecessarily. A vehicle and crew is on hand in case of emergencies and are also in charge of making sure the camp is well taken care of.

General itinerary:

Day 1

Arrive in Tanzania. A guide will meet you upon arrival and transfer you to Arusha for overnight.

Day 2

Board a morning-scheduled flight to the Serengeti National Park. Your walking guide will meet you in the Serengeti and game drive with you to the walking camp. This camp is located in the Serengeti wilderness zone and camp will be a lightweight camp only taken into the area for the duration of your walk. Enjoy an afternoon walk before some campfire time under the stars.

Day 3, 4 & 5

Enjoy the next 3 days walking and exploring this huge wild place. The area will be surrounded by wildlife and your guide will ensure you are having the time of your life but also stay safe. Generally camp will stay in one location and you will take different walks into new directions everyday. But, camp will move if the area proves not to be optimal. Flexibility is the key to making these walking experiences work

Day 6
