A hut-to-hut hiking adventure in the highlands of Peru. Enjoy spectacular glacial views, bamboo forests and the ruins of Machu Picchu!


Description

Starting from Cusco, the Salkantay Trail follows the mestizo descendants’ trails of the Incan Empire. The remote surrounding mountains offer stunning vistas, hot springs, horseback riding options, and acclimatizing trekking. The finale of this journey is a guided excursion of the historic breathtaking ruins - Machu Picchu.

In Detail

DAY 1 –
CUSCO

Upon arrival into Cusco you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The night is at your leisure to relax and begin acclimatizing to the higher elevation.

DAY 2 –
CUSCO

Today we will have a full day trek through Sacred Valley. The excursion starts from the archaeological site of Ollantaytambo, which is one of the most ancient continually occupied human settlements in the Americas. We will then visit another impressive Inca complex, the archaeological site of Pisaq, with terraces built on its hills. To visit the site, we will walk along winding paths along a mountain cliff with stunning scenery overlooking the Andes. Your guide will pick you up at the hotel and escort the group on a private tour of the ancient ruins. We will return in the early afternoon to the hotel in time for dinner.

DAY 3 –
SALKANTAY

This following morning we will transfer by vehicle to the crown jewel of this trek the Salkantay Lodge & Adventure Resort, located approximately 3.5 hours away in a remote setting at approximately 3900m in the high Andean valley of Soraypampa. The Lodge has stunning views of the surrounding mountains and offers ‘Andean Energetic Cuisine’ featuring guest-friendly regional organic food

DAY 4 –
SALKANTAY

After a hearty breakfast we will spend another day acclimating with a glacial trek. Optional horse riding expedition to the additional sites in the area (extra cost).

DAY 5 –
SALKANTAY

The next day is our longest of the trek crossing the highest point on this spectacular trail. We climb to over 4600m and reach Wayra Lodge after he descent from the pass in a remote and secluded setting.

DAY 6 –
SALKANTAY

The next day is a short trek to the Colpa Lodge with an optional excursion to the nearby hot spring. This evening we will spend the night in an open promontory at the confluence of three rivers with prominent views of lush green mountains.

DAY 7 –
SALKANTAY

The following morning after a hearty breakfast we will begin hiking towards Lucma Lodge where we will have a chance to meet the members of the local community. The Lucma Lodge is located in avocado grove in a remote village approximately 30 minutes up the Llacatapa Inca Trail. This lodge offers the opportunity to explore the small village of Lucmabamba.

DAY 8 –
AGUAS CALIENTES

Our last day on the trail finds us heading up and over Llactapata pass (2600m) where we will enjoy lunch. Shortly beyond the pass we are offered the unique view of Machu Picchu from the southwest as well as the remote Llactapata ruins. Afterwards we will begin our final descent to Vilconata River through lush bamboo forests and coffee plantations. We will take a short scenic train ride to Aguas Calientes where we will check into Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel and have the afternoon to view the ruins and enjoy the natural surroundings. Inkaterra is a rustic boutique hotel in the heart of Machu Picchu’s Historic Sanctuary in the clouds forest in Aguas Calientes. Every casita offers serenity and solitude at 2450m on a privately owned five-hectare mountainside reserve. A unique luxury Andean ambience.

DAY 9 –
MACHU PICCHU / CUSCO

The following morning we will have a privately guided excursion up to the ruins to learn about the culture of the area and its historical and cultural significance. This afternoon we will check out of the Inkaterra and board the Vistadome train back to Cusco. Upon arrival in Cusco we will be escorted to our hotel for a final night in the city.

DAY 10 –
DEPART

With an early departure out of Cusco we will have a layover in Lima before departing home.
