IN DETAIL

USA RIVER / ARRIVAL
On arrival
you are transferred to Rivertrees Country Inn. There is time to meet some of
the team for those arriving in the morning or afternoon.
Overnight
Rivertrees Country Inn (dinner)
Biking
distance: n/a
Day2 -
USA RIVER TO KIA
In the morning
after breakfast there is a full trip briefing with route notes, guides and team
introduction and kit check. Participants that have brought their own bikes will
have time to assemble and test them. In the afternoon we set off on mountain
bikes down towards the Maasai Steppe.
Overnight
KIA Lodge (breakfast - lunch - dinner)
Ride
distance: 36 km/22 miles Ride time: 4 to 5 hours
Day 3 -
KIA TO NYUMBA YA MUNGU
Early
breakfast to fuel up and a relatively early start are essential. We set off
through bush on dirt tracks and the pace varies according to the terrain. Lunch
is taken in the heat of the day and then afternoon is back on our bikes. In the
late afternoon we arrive in camp to rehydrate and refuel our bodies. Showers
are available.
Overnight
Wilderness Camp (breakfast - lunch - dinner)
Ride
distance: 80 km/49 miles Ride time: 7 - 8 hours
Day 4 –
NYUMBA YA MUNGU TO CHANIKA
The
routine starts to become apparent now and we are soon riding away from Nyumba
ya Munga, a massive dam. The road now follows the Pangani river valley, along
the very same trails of early explorers and slavers alike. In the late evening
we head into our camp near a nearby ancient hill or inselberg.
Overnight
Wilderness Camp (breakfast - lunch - dinner)
Ride
distance: 75 km/46 miles Ride time: 7 to 8 hours
Day 5 –
CHANIKA TO MNAZI
By now the
Pare mountains and the Usambara mountains are obvious and loom to our left.
These are part of the 'Eastern Arc' mountains, which are a biodiversity
hotspot, veritible islands that have enabled endimic species to flourish over
millenia. By late afternoon we are at the base of the Usambara mountains and
head into camp.
Overnight
Wilderness Camp (breakfast - lunch - dinner)
Ride
distance: 82 km/50 miles Ride time: 6 to 7 hours
Day 6 –
MNAZI TO LUSHOTO
The hill
climb. The hardiest will finish this. Some may like to take advantage of the
support vehicles at the latter end of the day. A great ride nevertheless deep
into and up to the top of the Usambara Mountains.
Overnight
Wilderness Camp (breakfast - lunch - dinner)
Ride
distance: 60 km/37 miles Ride time: 6 to 7 hours
Day 7 –
LUSHOTO TO MAMBULU
We head
off on a mixture of uphill and downhill sections as we cycle through the
mountains.
Overnight
Wilderness Camp (breakfast - lunch - dinner)
Ride
distance: 60 km/37 miles Ride time: 7 to 8 hours
Day 8 –
MAMBULU TO AMANI
Amani is a
forest reserve, and for birders and entomologists it is an absolute haven. The
riding to Amani is quite tough. For those that are interested there is a guided
tour into the forest with local experts.
Overnight
Wilderness Camp (breakfast - lunch - dinner)
Ride
distance: 30 km/18 miles Ride time: 3 to 5 hours
Day 9 –
AMANI TO PANGANI
The final
section. Most of this day is downhill as we move from the cool to the humid
coast. Pangani was the final point before slaves and ivory were shipped out on
the Swahili dhows to the wider world. In the late afternoon we arrive in
Pangani and head to the beach to our beach lodge accommodation for a grand
finale beach BBQ.
Overnight
Beach Lodge (breakfast - lunch - dinner)
Ride
distance: 85 km/53 miles Ride time: 6 to 9 hours
Day 10 –
PANGANI TO DAR
From Pangani vehicle transfers are available to
Dar es Salaam although some may prefer to take schedule flights to Zanzibar or
further afield. Today we can catch a schedule charter back to Arusha and make
necessary arrangements to connect with International departures.
