Why this itinerary?

This is a challenge event to conquer all of the 3 most prominent peaks in East Africa – Mt Kenya, Mt Meru, and Kilimanjaro. An annual event already undertaken by an all-female team, and this is a chance for our guests to partake in this wonderful adventure.



Description

This trip combines Mt Kenya Sirimon – Chogoria Route – 6 days, Mt Meru – 4 days, and Kilimanjaro Machame Route – 7 days into one epic 3-week journey. A couple of days are spent transferring and some appropriate rest days are allocated.

DAY 1
NAIROBI

On arrival you are personally met by one of our representatives and transferred to a well appointed hotel. In the evening there is a full briefing with the climbs Manager and your guide. Dinner is included at your hotel.

DAY 2
MT KENYA / OLD MOSES

Depart your hotel after breakfast and drive to Nanyuki. From here it is around 15km to the Sirimon park gate (2700m). Picnic lunch will be served at the gate. After signing in with the park officials we will start an acclimatization hike which will see us walking in the tropical forest, occasionally enjoying the sighting of a monkey, a buffalo or even an elephant arriving at Old Moses (Judmaier) camp (3200m) late evening.

DAY 3
MT KENYA / LIKI NORTH

After breakfast, we start the hike of the moorland vegetation walking through the picturesque views of the Sirimon and the Mackinders valleys arriving at Likki North Hut in the early afternoon. Lunch at this camp and later take an acclimatization walk around the camp.

DAY 4
MT KENYA / SHIPTONS

Start the hike of the steep slope towards Shipton’s camp (4200m) arriving in time for lunch. The giant groundsels occurring along this route are some of the spectacular views on Mt Kenya. Afternoon walk to the Kami Hut and later get back to the camp for dinner and overnight.

DAY 5
MT KENYA / AUSTRIAN HUT

Depart Shipton’s after breakfast and make peak-circuit navigation to Austrian Hut (4790m). On the way enjoy the views of the Simba col; and the Lewis glacier arriving at the Top hut in time for a hot lunch. Afternoon at leisure, dinner and overnight at the camp.

DAY 6
MT KENYA / MERU MT KENYA LODGE

At 04.30 hrs, wake up and have some tea and biscuits. Start the attempt of the summit peak (Point Lenana, alt 4985m) which is the highlight of our trip! Take photos with the African sunrise and its also possible to see Mt Kilimanjaro to the West if the weather is clear. Descend down to Mintos camp (4100m), where we will have some breakfast. You have a picnic lunch on trail. Then descend further down to Meru Mt.Kenya Lodge (2700m) where we will spend the night.

DAY 7
MT KENYA / NAIROBI

Depart the lodge after breakfast and walk through the spectacular bamboo forest to connect with the 4x4 vehicle to Chogoria town and on to Nairobi.

DAY 8 –
NAIROBI / ARUSHA

Today you will take a schedule flight to Arusha and then get transferred to your well appointed hotel to relax. Afternoon activities in Arusha can be arranged.

DAY 9 –
ARUSHA

Rest day. In the evening you will have a full briefing with the Climbs Manager.

DAY 10 –
MT MERU / MIRIAKAMBA

In the morning we are collected from your hotel and transfer to Arusha National Park. At the Momella gate we finish registration formalities before setting off with your guide and armed ranger - there is abundant wildlife in the forests! The forest section is especially scenic with strangler figs and the possibility of seeing buffalo grazing in one of the clearings. In the late afternoon we reach a viewpoint before heading onto Miriakamba hut for dinner.

DAY 11 –
MT MERU / SADDLE HUT

We set off from Miriakamba initially still in the forest zone but in a few hours as we reach Saddle hut for lunch in the alpine desert zone. In the afternoon a walk to the summit of Little Meru can be taken for stunning views before heading back to Saddle Hut for dinner.

DAY 12 –
MT MERU / MIRIAKAMBA

We rise early and our hard work is rewarded at dawn as the sun rises to the East. Kilimanjaro is normally clearly seen from here and the sheer cliffs of the crater fall dramatically 1000 feet or more. We return back and after some brunch at Saddle Hut, we continue down to Miriakamba hut for dinner.

DAY 13 –
MT MERU / ARUSHA

The final section takes up to 3 hours to return to our vehicles where we say farewell to our crew and have time for a short picnic lunch and game drive before returning to Arusha for a well deserved shower!

DAY 14 –
ARUSHA

Today is another rest day.

DAY 15 –
ARUSHA

Rest day. In the evening there will be a full briefing with the Climbs Manager.

DAY 16 –
KILIMANJARO / MACHAME

After breakfast you depart by vehicle to Kilimanjaro. At the gate your crew finalize packing and after finishing with formalities you start off from Machame gate. Today's hiking is through verdant afromontane forest to Machame camp and on route you have a picnic lunch. Look out for pretty endemic flora and a gradation of forest zones!

DAY 17 –
KILIMANJARO / SHIRA

From Machame camp you hike to Shira Camp. The first section is relatively steep and altitude is gained rapidly. A picnic lunch is taken on trail today. The zone you pass through today is known as the heath zone where attractive Helichrysum and lobelia plants become apparent. Various geologic features can be seen today from lava tubes to glacial valleys.

DAY 18–
KILIMANJARO / BARRANCO

Today is a walk high sleep low day. You ascend into alpine desert and for those that are feeling strong you can even head up to Lava Tower before descending to Barranco camp. Lunch is taken as a picnic lunch on route. This is a long day but note that the next time you head to this altitude is in two days time - great acclimatisation day!

DAY 19 –
KILIMANJARO / KARANGA

From Barranco camp, famous for its' giant groundsels (Senecio species), you ascend the Barranco wall and hike glacial valleys to Karanga camp. Today is a relatively short day hiking and lunch is taken at Karanga camp. In the afternoon a walk can be taken with your guides for great views of the Southern walls of Kibo and deep glacial valleys.

DAY 20 –
KILIMANJARO / BARAFU

Today is another half day ascending to Barafu camp. Once again lunch is taken in camp allowing plenty of time to relax before the summit bid. Desolate alpine desert and at times strong winds rip over this camp and yet in the evening splendid views of Mawenzi peak are the norm. A relatively early dinner is taken before heading to rest for the evening.

DAY 21 –
KILIMANJARO / MWEKA

Most people depart just before midnight for the final summit bid. Patience and persistence is the name of game to reach the summit and by dawn as the first rays of light start to appear, most arrive near the rim. Ascending via Stella Point affords a relatively short final section to Uhuru peak, the Roof of Africa! What goes up must come down and your goal today is to reach Mweka camp.

DAY 22 –
OUT/ ARUSHA

After breakfast you descend once again through montane forest and around mid day after saying farewell to your crew, you are picked up and transferred back to your hotel for a well deserved shower! Tonight we celebrate the conclusion of an amazing event!

DAY 23 –
ARUSHA

Today a day room is held to allow you to relax and check out later in the day. A vehicle is on hand to transfer you to the airport to connect with your international flight, schedule flights back to Nairobi or you may connect with further programs.
